NASA Stops Renting New York Office Due to Budget Cuts

Space Research Institute Office Rental in New York

NASA has announced that it is terminating the lease for the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) office in New York City, located in a building at Columbia University, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Director Mackenzie Lystrup announced in a letter to employees. The lease will end May 31, 2025, and more than 130 GISS employees involved in climate and planetary systems research will transition to remote work.

GISS, founded in 1961, is known for its climate change models and studies of the Earth’s atmosphere. The institute leases about 4,000 square feet in Armstrong Hall, paying $3.03 million annually. The decision to end the lease is linked to a review of all government contracts initiated by the US presidential administration, although it is unclear whether this came from NASA or external entities such as Elon Musk’s Office of Government Effectiveness.

Employees are concerned that this could be a harbinger of budget cuts for Earth science. The 2026 budget proposal calls for a nearly 50% reduction in funding for NASA’s science programs, threatening climate research.
